I KNOW THAT’S RIGHT
Discipline Is Not Your Problem. Dysregulation Is.
A reflection on regulation, shame, and rebuilding self-trust.
There Have Been Seasons
There have been seasons where I thought I had a discipline problem.
Last year, I was spending money in ways that didn’t make sense. I told myself I needed more restraint. More control.
But if I’m honest, I was depressed.
More recently, I bought something I didn’t need after travelling back from London, tired, hungover, not fully regulated.
It wasn’t a discipline issue.
It was a regulation issue.
When I was forcing myself to ‘be better,’ everything felt tight. Pressure. Shame. Control.
When I regulated — my patience with Phoenix, my emotional state, my spending — it didn’t feel like discipline.
It felt natural.
It Wasn’t Discipline
When your nervous system is dysregulated, your brain is in survival mode. And survival mode doesn’t prioritise discipline. It prioritises relief.
Relief looks like:
- Spending.
- Scrolling.
- Avoiding.
- Procrastinating.
- Snapping.
- Giving up.
Then we shame ourselves for not being disciplined.
But you can’t build trust with yourself from shame.
And most of us are trying to discipline ourselves out of a nervous system problem.
Signs It’s Not Discipline
You might think you need more discipline if:
- You start strong then crash.
- You avoid things you actually care about.
- You feel ‘behind’ all the time.
- You overthink simple decisions.
- You promise yourself you’ll change tomorrow.
Before Discipline, Regulate
Before forcing action, create safety.
When I started regulating first — my emotions, my energy, my environment — something shifted.
Consistency followed naturally.
Trust followed naturally.
Momentum followed naturally.
There is another way to build consistency. And it doesn’t start with pressure.
You don’t need to try harder.
You need to feel safer.
If this resonated with you…
I created something to help you start rebuilding self-trust gently and practically.
